How resistance is preventing your evolution

Resistance is the silent killer of your potential – an invisible force that whispers ‘not today’ while your dreams slowly fade into the background of your life.

Do you ever wonder why it’s so difficult for you to change? Do you get frustrated or annoyed that your life is the way it is, however you seem to be unable to change?

At the same time wonder why it’s impossible to change others? You get frustrated with your kids or your partner. You want the best for them, yet you seem to have zero influence on their behavior?

The reason is: Resistance!

The paradox: Most people resist the one thing that will change their life forever.

But what actually is resistance?

Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard, or smelled. But it can be felt. We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential.

Rule of thumb:

The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.

– Steven Pressfield

Resistance come in many form:

The most common form of resistance is: Resisting the one things that help you grow, overcome your limitations, expand your energy and improve your life situation. Any act that will require short term discomfort and offer delayed gratification.

It is different for everybody. but you know exactly what it is. Some one the most common form are:

  • Going to the gym

  • Watching less TV

  • Rising more books

  • Learning a new skill

  • Eating a healthier diet

  • Quitting drugs or alcohol

  • Starting your own business

  • Breaking up with your abusive partner

The Problem: most people know what they should be doing but don’t because of this invisible force called residence.

It is similar to your adaptive cruise control. When you approach another car, you slow down and keep at a safe distance.

Why do we resist?

Because the brain likes comfort. It does not like change. It always likes to go back to what it is familiar with. Even if the familiar causes suffering in your life and the life of others.

I call it the addiction to suffering. People simple resist improving their life’s situation because they are addicted to the familiar.

Anything that supports your growth, your expansion and the evolution of your soul require discomfort.

Discomfort equals pain. However, short term pain leads to long term fulfillment – whereas short term comfort leads to long term suffering.

What is the solution?

You need to earn to push through the resistance.

If you read my newsletter The human seed, you will understand the reason behind the resistance a little better.

You learn to push through resistance by:

  • go towards your fear

  • do what is uncomfortable

  • accepting pain as part of growth

  • change your relationship to rejection

  • learn a new skill, work out, change your diet

Do anything that stretches you, supports your growth and expands your energy. Anything that pushes you out of the comfort zone.

A good indication of what will give you the fastest progress – the one thing that you have been avoiding all of your life – something that scares you.

It can be daunting at first. Change is scary. But guess what – the world around you changes constantly. Everything changes. Can resist change, but not for long. And those who don’t change will be left behind.

Pushing through resistance is a muscle that you can grow and strengthen. Over time it get’s easier and easier. Until one day, it becomes an automatic habits, a part of who you are. Almost like an addiction. but instead of addiction to suffering – addiction to growth.

Only when you get out of the comfort zone will you grow, only when you grow will you find fulfillment. What doesn’t grow, dies.

It is always a good idea to start small. When you create small habits, you build momentum. Start with the small little things in life that you avoid doing:

  • Not arguing with your partner

  • Making your bed in the morning

  • Going out of your way to help others

  • Thanking and forgiving your parents.

  • Cleaning up the mess you didn’t create

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator

  • Choosing a healthy snack instead of chips and beer

  • Apologizing especially if you don’t believe you were wrong

Anytime you think I don’t want to, I can’t or when you are tempted to choose the easy route instead of doing things the right way, when you feel temptation – do the opposite.

Breathwork and resistance

Breathwork teaches the benefits of pushing through resistance by creating a safe, guided space where you can observe how your body and mind respond to discomfort without judgment.

Here are 3 ways:

1.) Physical Resistance: As you engage in intentional breathing patterns, your body may initially resist the unfamiliar rhythm

2.) Emotional Resistance: Breathwork often brings suppressed emotions to the surface. The natural urge might be to stop or avoid these feelings.

3.) Mental Resistance: The mind may try to distract you with thoughts like “This isn’t working” or “I can’t do this.”

Resilience and Empowerment: Each time you overcome resistance in a breathwork session, you gain a tangible sense of accomplishment. This builds trust in your capacity to handle life’s challenges, reinforcing the idea that growth lies just beyond the comfort zone.

Another way resistance shows up in breathwork is:

Avoidance: Saying you will do one thing but not committing. This is a dangerous trap to fall into. Your mind gets used to the behavior. It becomes a subconscious patter. To the degree that you spend the rest of your life dreaming, planing and never acting.

Since I started offering free breathwork sessions three months ago, over 50 people emailed me and wanted to join. Some emailed me multiple times. But usually only a handful of people show up.

This is a good example of the ego protection itself. When the ego sees danger, it runs. The ability to get out of the thinking mind and access the deeper part of the subconscious mind threatens the ego.

This is very common with breathwork. My first breathwork sessions was one of the top 3 transforming events in my life. Yet, it took me another year before I did my next breath wok session and committed to a regular practice. Always finding excuse: No time, more important things to do, too tired. Just not feeling like it today.

If you are one of those who emailed me and never showed up, I highly recommend making the commitment. This might be the one thing that will take you to the next level in life.

Surrender

When you are able to push through, you learn to surrender to life. Life will open up new dimensions of mental freedom that you have not experienced before. Where you used to see challenges you begin to see opportunities.

You start running towards instead of any from your fear.

You begin to understand darkness as a necessary contrast to light. Enjoy life despite the pain. And realize that only failure can catapult you towards success.

When you chase joy while running away from pain you will find: Joy is always running faster and pain will always catch up. It cannot be any other way. Both come from the same. Stop joy and accept pain and your life will transform.

Pushing through resistance can be hard. Only when you do the hard things does life become easy. When you choose the easy route, life will become hard.
